Recognition of the Farhud and International Farhud Day
The Farhud — “violent dispossession” — was the pro-Nazi massacre of Jews in Iraq, June 1–2, 1941. It was followed by the expulsion of 850,000 Jews from Arab countries to Israel. Historian and investigative reporter Edwin Black, founder of International Farhud Day, documented the event and its aftermath in his bestselling The Farhud.
International Farhud Day was first observed on June 1, 2015, at a ceremony at United Nations HQ sponsored by the IAJLJ, the AAJLJ, and StandWithUs, in association with Justice for Jews from Arab Countries, Scholars for Peace in the Middle East, the Israeli-American Council, the Auto Channel, and a coalition of international organizations.

The Green Fleet Initiative
In 2006 and 2007, Edwin Black led an international initiative to get the world off of oil. He invented the word “petropolitics” to describe international global conflict centering on oil. To international acclaim, he published the bestseller Internal Combustion, which won 4 awards for editorial excellence. These were: 1) from the American Jewish Congress, the Thomas Edison Award; 2) from the American Society of Journalists and Authors, a Best Non-Fiction Book of 2006 Honorable Mention; 3) from the Harmony Festival, the Green Globe Award for the Best Book of the Year to Rescue the Environment; and 4) and from the American Jewish Press Association, the Rockower Award for the Best Investigation, 2007.
In a companion book, The Plan, Black warned that one day the Strait of Hormuz would be blocked by Iran or terrorists and the world would need an immediate prescription for survival, which the book outlined. Black went on a forty-city tour promoting immediate rapid conversion of America’s government and corporate fleets from internal combustion to electricity, hydrogen, natural gas, propane, ethanol, and other alternatives. He became a leading advocate for the Hydrogen Highway. Working with auto manufacturers such as Honda and GM, Black pushed for a fast rollout of EVs, hydrogen vehicles, and the lifting of ethanol restrictions.
Additionally, Black starred in the Hollywood alt fuel documentary Pump! which advocated for high-mileage engines. A major proponent of the “Clash for Clunkers” program, he envisioned a rapid deployment of refueling infrastructure and replacement of older poor-mileage with alt fuel models. Ultimately, the initiative failed when the Obama administration converted Cash for Clunkers into a politically-engineered purchase of unsold new petroleum-powered automobiles of any mileage profile — thus rescuing the old automotive paradigm. In additional, Honda and General Motors refused to mass produce CNG, hydrogen, and electric vehicles as promised. The fast-paced seismic fix fell apart.
